Pterygium: Understanding & Treating Surfer’s Eye

Pterygium is a benign growth of tissue on the conjunctiva, the clear membrane covering the white part of the eye. It typically starts near the inner corner of the eye (closest to the nose) and gradually extends across the front of the eye. In some cases, multiple pterygia can develop in the same eye.

Causes & Risk Factors

Pterygium is primarily caused by chronic exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light, making it more common in individuals who spend significant time outdoors. Other contributing factors include:

• Dry, dusty environments
• Wind exposure
• Frequent sun exposure without eye protection

Symptoms of Pterygium

While some cases are asymptomatic, pterygium can cause:

• Redness & irritation
• A wedge-shaped growth on the white part of the eye
• Blurred vision if the growth extends over the pupil
• Changes in astigmatism due to corneal pulling

Treatment Options

In mild cases, no treatment may be necessary. However, if the pterygium causes vision obstruction or persistent irritation, surgical removal may be recommended. The procedure involves peeling the growth off the eye and covering the exposed area with a graft of tissue from under the eyelid. This surgery is highly effective, with a low recurrence rate (less than 5%).
